At a glance

A Isfahan from China, measuring 257 × 310 cm. The covered area is about 7.97 m² (8.4' × 10.2'). Isfahan has stood for exceptionally fine knotting for centuries.

Materials and construction

Stated material: cotton warp, new wool. It is entirely hand-knotted. Pile height is given as 5-7mm.

Size and placement

The rug is rectangular. At this size the rug defines the room rather than accenting it.

Knot density and quality

The stated knot density is 500,000–599,999 knots/m². Very fine knotting of this kind takes many times the working hours and shows correspondingly precise pattern work.

Colour and appearance

It is catalogued under red and orange. Handmade rugs always show slight colour shifts from knot to knot — that is a mark of hand work, not a defect.
