Erami Qom silk, “Versace – Black”, 200 x 199 cm
Square to within a centimetre: 200 x 199 cm, 3.98 square metres, 70 Raj, approximately 3,980,000 knots, silk on silk.
Exactly square
A square is the most demanding format to weave. The loom tension has to stay even across a width equal to the length, and there is no direction in which a small drift in the drawing can be absorbed – both axes are checked by the eye at once. Workshops weave squares when the design is symmetrical enough to deserve one.
Black ground
The “Versace” drawings are dense baroque ornament, and here they sit on black. Silk on a black ground has a particular quality: the fibre still catches light along its length, so the ground is not dead flat but shifts between charcoal and true black as you move around it. The ornament appears to float rather than sit on the surface.
Placement and care
Four square metres, square – a centred seating area or a square hall. Avoid sustained direct sun, vacuum without a beater bar, and rotate periodically.
