A pair on a black ground

Black is the least forgiving ground colour in silk. Any variation between dye batches shows against it far more clearly than against a red or a blue, which is precisely why matched pairs on black are rare: they have to be woven together, from the same dye lot, or the two will never quite agree. The design

“Versace” is the workshop name for a group of drawings built on dense baroque ornament – scrolling acanthus, strong symmetry, heavy borders – rather than the Persian floral repertoire. On black the ornament reads as light on dark, which reverses the usual relationship and gives the pair an unusually graphic presence for silk rugs.

Placement and care

A pair of this size works either side of a bed, along a corridor, or flanking a doorway. Keep both out of direct sustained sunlight, vacuum with suction only, and rotate them on the same schedule so they wear together.
