The drawing

“Versace” is the workshop name for a family of dense baroque drawings – scrolling acanthus, strong central symmetry, deep borders – rather than the Persian floral repertoire. It is ornament that fills its field completely, which is why it needs a fine weave: at a coarse knot count the scrollwork closes up into texture and stops reading as drawing.

Blue at six square metres

Just under six million knots across roughly six square metres, all in silk on a blue ground. Silk carries blue better than any other fibre – the dye sits deep and the directional sheen keeps the field from flattening – which is why the great blue-ground rugs of Qom are silk rather than wool.

Placement and care

A living-room or dining-room size. Keep it out of sustained direct sunlight, vacuum without a beater bar, and rotate it once or twice a year.
