A carved surface, in silk

The name describes what the drawing imitates: the deep relief of carved wood, where ornament is cut back in layers and the light does the rest. Reproducing that in a flat pile is a shading problem. There is no actual relief – the sense of depth has to be built entirely out of graduated colour, which is why it takes a fine weave and why it is usually attempted in silk, where the fibre itself catches light differently at every angle.

Blue ground

Blue suits this drawing because it holds its depth: a carved-relief effect needs a ground dark enough for the raised elements to read against, without going so dark that the shading disappears into it.

Placement and care

Around six square metres, suited to a living or dining room. Avoid prolonged direct sun, vacuum with suction only, rotate periodically.
