Ghalicheh

Ghalicheh is the Persian word for a small rug, as distinct from a qali, a full carpet. It is a size category rather than a design, and it carries an expectation: small pieces are where the finest work is done, because the whole surface can be seen at once and there is nowhere for a shortcut to hide.

A dense floral field

The drawing here is an all-over floral rather than a medallion layout, which is the harder of the two to resolve. A medallion gives the eye a centre and a hierarchy; an all-over field has to hold attention through the density and variety of the drawing alone. At a million knots per square metre there is room for that variety.

Placement and care

Under three square metres: a hall, a study, or wall-mounted, which is a common choice for fine silk of this size. Keep it out of direct sun and vacuum with suction only.
