Two weavings, not two copies

The Rose Signature has been woven more than once at this size. That does not make either piece a reproduction of the other: the cartoon is shared, but every knot is placed by hand, the silk comes from a different dye lot, and the weavers are not necessarily the same. Laid side by side, two examples of one Persian design differ in the way two prints from a plate never do.

The scale of it

Fourteen and a third million knots. Roughly 1.2 million per square metre, held across a three-metre loom width for the years the piece takes to complete. The difficulty at this size is not the drawing but the tension: a warp that drifts even slightly over that span leaves a rug that will not lie flat, and there is no correcting it afterwards.

Placement and care

Twelve square metres of silk wants a large room and open floor. Keep it out of direct sustained sunlight, vacuum with suction only, rotate it once or twice a year, and have it cleaned professionally and infrequently.
