Hand-knotted Kashmir Oriental Rug in Silk, 303 × 88 cm

A white and beige Kashmir rug from India, hand-knotted, 303 × 88 cm. Kashmir looms work in the Persian idiom but in northern India, generally in silk or a silk-like fibre. The stated density is 500,000-599,999 knots/sqm; over 2.67 m² that is roughly 1.5 million knots, a solid workshop density. Pile 100% silk &, warp 100% cotton. Silk both in the pile and through the foundation, so the whole rug catches light rather than only the pattern. The cotton foundation holds it flat and dimensionally stable. A run of 303 cm covers most domestic hallways end to end. Proportion 3.44:1. This is the only example of this rug; when it is gone the size and drawing do not repeat.
