The piece in short
A Nain from Iran, measuring 148 × 103 cm. The covered area is about 1.52 m² (4.9' × 3.4'). Nain rugs are traditionally finely knotted, with pale ivory and blue palettes.
Materials and construction
Pile material is given as wool, silk, warp as cotton. The rug was hand-knotted throughout. Weight is given as ap. 5 kg.
Size and placement
The rug is rectangular. A format for a smaller room, or the area directly in front of a sofa.
Fineness of the knotting
The stated knot density is 500,000–599,999 knots/m². Very fine knotting of this kind takes many times the working hours and shows correspondingly precise pattern work.
On the colourway
Colour is recorded as blue / Türkis. Silk takes light differently from wool, so the same area can look pale from one side and deep from the other.
