The design

“Versace” is the workshop name for a group of drawings built on dense baroque ornament – scrolling acanthus, medallion heads, heavy borders – rather than on the Persian floral repertoire. The palette here is green against black, which is an unusual and demanding combination in silk: both colours are dark, so the pattern is separated by tone and by the direction of the pile rather than by contrast.

Near-square format

Six centimetres separate the two dimensions. Square-ish rugs are read differently from long ones – the eye takes in the whole field at once instead of travelling down it – which suits a centred, symmetrical drawing of this kind.

Placement and care

Well suited to a square seating area or a hall. Keep it out of sustained direct sun, vacuum with suction only, and rotate it periodically.
