About this rug
A Nain from Iran, measuring 316 × 261 cm. It covers approximately 8.25 m², or 10.4' × 8.6'. Nain rugs are traditionally finely knotted, with pale ivory and blue palettes.
What it is made of
The pile is wool, on a warp of cotton. The rug was hand-knotted throughout. Weight is given as ap. 18 kg.
Format and use
The rug is rectangular. At this size the rug defines the room rather than accenting it.
Fineness of the knotting
The stated knot density is 600,000–699,999 knots/m². Very fine knotting of this kind takes many times the working hours and shows correspondingly precise pattern work.
On the colourway
Colour is recorded as multicolour. Handmade rugs always show slight colour shifts from knot to knot — that is a mark of hand work, not a defect.
Age and condition
Stated age: antique. As an antique piece, condition should be judged against its age.
