A hand-knotted Qom rug from Iran, 201 × 148 cm. Qom weaving began in the early twentieth century and works to a drawn cartoon rather than from memory, which is why the layouts come out so exact. Around 1 million knots went into this piece (300,000-399,999 knots/sqm) — a knot count that balances detail against durability. Pile 100% wool with silk, warp 100% cotton. Wool carries the ground and silk picks out the drawing, so the pattern stands slightly proud of the field — you can feel the difference with a hand across the surface. The cotton foundation holds it flat and dimensionally stable. A mid-size piece at 2.97 m² — bedside, before a fireplace, or under a small table. Proportion 1.36:1.
