A hand-knotted Qom rug from Iran, 207 × 140 cm. Qom weaving began in the early twentieth century and works to a drawn cartoon rather than from memory, which is why the layouts come out so exact. At 300,000-399,999 knots/sqm the pile holds around 1 million knots in total — a medium-fine weave that wears well underfoot. Pile 100% wool with silk; warp 100% cotton. Wool carries the ground and silk picks out the drawing, so the pattern stands slightly proud of the field — you can feel the difference with a hand across the surface. The cotton foundation holds it flat and dimensionally stable. At 207 × 140 cm it works as a defined island rather than wall-to-wall cover. Proportion 1.48:1. One of a kind: hand-knotted rugs are not made in editions, so this exact piece exists once.
