The piece in short
A Tabriz from Iran, measuring 200 × 152 cm. It covers approximately 3.04 m², or 6.6' × 5'. Tabriz is one of the oldest and most important weaving centres in Persia.
What it is made of
Construction: wool in the pile over a cotton foundation. Construction method: hand-knotted. Weight is given as ap. 10 kg.
Format and use
The rug is rectangular. At this size it anchors a living room as the central surface.
Fineness of the knotting
The stated knot density is 500,000–599,999 knots/m². Very fine knotting of this kind takes many times the working hours and shows correspondingly precise pattern work.
How it reads
It is catalogued under black and grey. Handmade rugs always show slight colour shifts from knot to knot — that is a mark of hand work, not a defect.
Age and condition
Stated age: contemporary, 0–20 years old. Being recent, the pile shows little wear and holds its full height.
