The piece in short
Origin Iran, format 318 × 200 cm — a Tabriz made entirely by hand. It covers approximately 6.36 m², or 10.4' × 6.6'. Tabriz is one of the oldest and most important weaving centres in Persia.
Construction
Construction: wool, silk in the pile over a cotton foundation. The rug was hand-knotted throughout. Weight is given as ap. 18 kg.
Where it fits
The rug is rectangular. At this size it anchors a living room as the central surface.
Fineness of the knotting
The stated knot density is 300,000–399,999 knots/m². At this density even small-scale motifs can be worked out cleanly.
On the colourway
It is catalogued under black and grey. Handmade rugs always show slight colour shifts from knot to knot — that is a mark of hand work, not a defect.
Age
Stated age: contemporary, 0–20 years old. As a contemporary piece the pile is still even and largely unwalked.
