At a glance
A Isfahan from Iran, measuring 163 × 107 cm. The covered area is about 1.74 m² (5.3' × 3.5'). Isfahan has stood for exceptionally fine knotting for centuries.
Materials and construction
The pile is wool, on a warp of cotton. The rug was hand-knotted throughout. Weight is given as ap. 5 kg.
Format and use
The rug is rectangular. A format for a smaller room, or the area directly in front of a sofa.
Knot density and quality
The stated knot density is 500,000–599,999 knots/m². Very fine knotting of this kind takes many times the working hours and shows correspondingly precise pattern work.
On the colourway
Colour is recorded as multicolour. Silk takes light differently from wool, so the same area can look pale from one side and deep from the other.
Condition
Stated age: contemporary, 0–20 years old. As a contemporary piece the pile is still even and largely unwalked.
