The piece in short
Origin Iran, format 113 × 75 cm — a Nain made entirely by hand. It covers approximately 0.85 m², or 3.7' × 2.5'. Nain rugs are traditionally finely knotted, with pale ivory and blue palettes.
Materials and construction
The pile is wool, on a warp of cotton. Construction method: hand-knotted. Weight is given as ap. 2 kg.
Size and placement
The rug is rectangular. Small enough to sit in front of a dresser or just inside a door.
Fineness of the knotting
The stated knot density is 500,000–599,999 knots/m². Very fine knotting of this kind takes many times the working hours and shows correspondingly precise pattern work.
How it reads
The stated colourway is black and grey. Handmade rugs always show slight colour shifts from knot to knot — that is a mark of hand work, not a defect.
Condition
Stated age: antique. In a rug of this age, patina and some pile loss belong to the picture.
