Two rugs offered together: 207 x 134 cm and 200 x 125 cm, both 100% silk at 72.1 Raj, carrying 2,898,000 and 2,729,000 knots respectively. Woven by the Hossein Erami workshop in Qom.

Why a pair is not two rugs

Rugs woven in parallel share their dye lots and their weaver. Silk is dyed in batches, and no two batches of a natural dye are ever quite the same shade – which is why a pair assembled after the fact almost always shows a difference in the ground colour when the two are laid side by side. A pair woven together does not have that problem. It is also why pairs are commissioned rather than found.

The drawing

Golfarang is the rose-centred floral repertoire of Persian weaving, naturalistic in its flower forms. Tak Gardeh sets it around a single central medallion with an open field and no corner pieces. At 72.1 Raj the roses have enough knots to shade rather than step.

Placement and care

A pair of this size suits a corridor, either side of a bed, or flanking a fireplace. Keep both out of direct sustained sun, vacuum with suction only, and rotate them together so they age at the same rate.
