The piece in short
A Nain from Iran, measuring 236 × 145 cm. That is roughly 3.42 m² of floor, about 7.7' × 4.8'. Nain rugs are traditionally finely knotted, with pale ivory and blue palettes.
Materials and construction
The pile is wool, silk, on a warp of cotton. It is entirely hand-knotted. Weight is given as approx. 6 kg.
Format and use
The rug is rectangular. Large enough to hold a full seating group.
On the knot count
The stated knot density is 600,000–699,999 knots/m². Very fine knotting of this kind takes many times the working hours and shows correspondingly precise pattern work.
On the colourway
Colour is recorded as red and orange. Handmade rugs always show slight colour shifts from knot to knot — that is a mark of hand work, not a defect.
Age
Stated age: contemporary, 0–20 years old. As a contemporary piece the pile is still even and largely unwalked.
