Golfarang

Golfarang – literally “European flower” – is one of the established repertoires of Persian floral weaving. It centres on the rose and on naturalistic, rounded flower forms rather than the stylised palmettes of older tribal design. It entered the Persian vocabulary through European pattern books and was absorbed and reworked by Persian workshops, which is how it came by its name.

Dark blue as a ground

A deep blue field is the hardest ground for floral drawing, because every flower has to hold its own against it without turning chalky. Silk helps: the fibre carries saturated dye and reflects enough light that the blue reads as depth rather than as a flat block. Twelve and a half million knots give the flowers the resolution to stay crisp against it.

Placement and care

Nearly twelve square metres, suited to a large living or dining room. Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, vacuum without a beater bar, and rotate it once or twice a year.
