At a glance
This Tabriz comes from Iran and measures 103 × 103 cm. That is roughly 1.06 m² of floor, about 3.4' × 3.4'. Tabriz is one of the oldest and most important weaving centres in Persia.
Materials and construction
Stated material: cotton warp, Korkwolle, new wool. The rug was hand-knotted throughout. Pile height is given as 5-7mm.
Size and placement
The rug is round. A small format, at home in a hallway, beside a bed, or in front of a bench.
Fineness of the knotting
The stated knot density is 500,000–599,999 knots/m². Very fine knotting of this kind takes many times the working hours and shows correspondingly precise pattern work.
On the colourway
It is catalogued under red and orange. Handmade rugs always show slight colour shifts from knot to knot — that is a mark of hand work, not a defect.
