Erami Qom silk, “Fiery Sky”, 200 x 301 cm

A hand-knotted Qom silk rug from the Erami workshop, woven in 100% natural silk at 66 Raj. It measures 200 x 301 cm, a fraction over six square metres.

What 66 Raj means

Raj is the traditional Qom measure of fineness: the number of knots counted across a seven-centimetre span of warp. Sixty-six sits in the upper band of what is woven commercially. The finer the Raj, the smaller each knot, and the more precisely a curve, a stem or a shaded petal can be resolved. Coarser weaves approximate the same drawing in steps.

Silk, and why it matters here

The pile is natural silk throughout. Silk takes dye differently from wool and reflects light along the length of the fibre, so the same field reads light from one direction and deep from the other. On a design named “Fiery Sky” that behaviour is the point: the colour shifts as you walk past it, or as the light moves through the room over the course of a day.

Placement and care

At 200 x 301 cm this is a room-sized piece, comfortable under a dining table or as the anchor of a seating area. Keep silk out of direct, sustained sunlight and vacuum without a beater bar. Rotate it once or twice a year so wear and light exposure stay even.
